NORMAN, Okla. — For the third time in her career and second time this season, senior Whitney Ritchie was named the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday.
After falling to OSU’s Viktoriya Lushkova in a non-conference Bedlam matchup back in March, Ritchie came back with a vengeance to defeat Lushkova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday, April 19. This was Ritchie’s fifth win over a ranked opponent this season. It was also the only time all season that Ritchie gave up only two games in an entire match.
In doubles, Ritchie teamed up with freshman Morgan Chumney for the first time all year. The duo topped the 53rd-ranked Narattana and Lushkova, 8-3, to help give the Sooners the edge in doubles. This was her third win over a ranked doubles team this season.
Ritchie leads the Sooners in singles with a 17-3 record, including a flawless 11-0 record at the No. 2 position for the year. She is 6-2 at the No.1 and 2 positions in Big 12 play with both losses coming against ranked players at the No. 1 spot. She is the current active singles leader for Oklahoma with 86 wins.
The Sooners next stop is Fort Worth, Texas for the Big 12 Championships, April 24-27. Oklahoma plays Texas Tech at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 25.
