NORMAN, Okla.— The University of Oklahoma track and field teams are back on the road to compete at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend. The meet begins Friday afternoon for the Sooners with the Charles Nguyen and Austin Perry in the men’s hammer throw at 5 p.m.

Scheduled competition includes two teams ranked in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top 25, along with five others. Kansas will bring the 25th-ranked men’s team and the 10th-ranked women’s team. The Arkansas men are ranked third and women are ninth.

Other teams scheduled to compete include University of Tulsa, Oklahoma State University, South Plains, Missouri State and Arkansas Baptist.

Oklahoma is coming off a split weekend that included three event wins at the Crimson Tide Invitational and several top-five finishes at the Stanford Invitational. As the season continues, OU coaches are looking for continued development from the Sooner student-athletes.

“The biggest thing I look forward to seeing is that each and every individual takes advantage of the opportunity to work on something to better themselves,” explained Head Coach Jim VanHootegem.

Alex Morgan was a bright spot for OU in the discus in the Crimson Tide Invitational as she set a meet record and improved her career best with a 172-2. She will compete at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Others to keep an eye on are Daunicia Demerson in the 400, Allen Eke in the 800 and Hayden McClain in the triple jump. Demerson finished second with a 54.77 in the 400-meter dash at the Crimson Tide Invitational.

The trip to Arkansas is the final step before the only home meet of the outdoor season. The Sooners will host the 45th annual John Jacobs Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Select field events will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with the rest of the meet scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We hope to take a lot of steps forward this weekend and have everyone healthy and ready for the John Jacobs Invite next weekend,” said VanHootegem.
