NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team defeated Tulsa in five sets at McCasland Field House on Tuesday night in its first spring match of the year. The Sooners won the match 3-2 by scores of 25-22, 25-15, 20-25, 18-25, 26-24.
Oklahoma ran off victories in the first two sets, and like the two team's regular season match up back in September, Tulsa forced a fifth by winning each of the next two.
Outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) and newcomer Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) led the Sooners with 17 kills apiece.
Outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) added 15 kills and 10 digs to record a double-double, while early enrollee Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) hit a team-high .368 with 11 kills and a match-high seven blocks.
For the match, Oklahoma outhit Tulsa, .237-.201 and registered 13 blocks to the Golden Hurricanes 10.
The Sooners are at the University of Houston Tournament on Saturday before returning home for their second and final spring match at McCasland against North Texas on Tuesday, April 8 at 7:00 pm.
Oklahoma has also scheduled its Sixth Annual OU Volleyball Golf Tournament on April 28. The golf fundraiser will go towards the Sooners' six-match European Tour scheduled for May and June.
