Ritchie Named Big 12 Player of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. — For the second time in her career, senior Whitney Ritchie was named the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Ritchie went undefeated in singles and doubles play over the weekend. In singles, Ritchie battled back, at the No. 1 spot, after a 3-6 loss in the first set to upset No. 56 Petra Niedermayerova 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), to give Kansas State their first conference loss. Ritchie and doubles partner Mia Lancaster had the doubles victory that clinched the point against Kansas State and gave them their 30th career win as a doubles team.

Against Kansas, Ritchie and Lancaster picked up their 10th doubles win of the season with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Ritchie also clinched the victory at Kansas with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot to improve her record to 14-1, including a 5-1 mark at No. 1 and a 9-0 mark at the No. 2 spot.

After having a 10-match win streak to start the season, Ritchie is now on a four-match streak at the No. 1 and 2 spots. She has only dropped nine sets this season and boasts the team’s best singles record as well as being the current active career singles leader with 83 wins.

Oklahoma hosts West Virginia and Iowa State this Friday and Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Friday’s match against the Mountaineers begins at 5 p.m. and Sunday’s match against the Cyclones starts at 12 p.m.
