NORMAN, Okla. – Liz Herrs, a sophomore on the Sooner track and field team, has been named Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Tri-Female of the Week, sharing the honor with Ese Okoro (Iowa State) and Le’Tristan Pledger (Texas Tech). It marks the first time in 10 years the Big 12 has named an Outdoor Track & Field Tri-Female Athletes of the Week. All three posted nation-leading marks in outdoor season-opening competition. Trayvon Brommel of Baylor earned the men’s award in the first outdoor weekly honors in 2014 for the conference.
Herrs, a sophomore from St. George, Kan., won the javelin title in the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., last Saturday. She beat 12 others to win with a throw of 176-2.
That mark is the best in the country and Big 12 by nearly two feet. It also improved her personal best by nearly three feet. The throw ranks as the third best in school history as Herrs led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Sooners in the javelin.
The award is the first weekly honor earned in track and field by a Sooner performer this season.
Herrs was the only field event competitor to earn the award. Brommel posted the nation’s best in the 200-meter dash, Okoro posted the nation’s best time in the 400-meter hurdles and Pledger’s leading time came in the 100-meter hurdles.
It marks the first such career Big 12 honor for Herrs. She led the country in the javelin with a then-personal best of 173-9 after her second competition of the 2013 season.
