OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma wrestling’s Cody Brewer and Kendric Maple completed action at the NCAA Championships inside Chesapeake Energy Arena with eighth place finishes in their respective weight classes.

At 133 pounds, Brewer faced No. 12 seed Joe Roth from Central Michigan, while Maple took on Penn State’s James English in the 149-pound bout.

Brewer, who fell by an 8-6 decision, trailed 2-1 after the first period but grabbed a 4-3 advantage in the second with a takedown and an escape. Brewer added two more escapes in the final two minutes, but it was not enough to catch Roth.

At NCAAs, Brewer posted a 3-3 record and earned All-America honors for the second straight year. On the season, the Kansas City, Mo., native recorded a 23-10 overall record.

With a 2-1 defeat in sudden victory at 149 pounds, Maple closed his illustrious career in the Crimson and Cream. The match had a similar feel to his meeting with Northwestern’s No. 5 seed Jason Tsirtsis on Friday morning, which Maple also dropped 2-1 in overtime.

Against English, Maple tallied an escape with about 1:20 remaining in the second. He started the third period on top and controlled the position for most of the period before English escaped his grasp.

Regulation ended with a 1-1 tie, and in the first tiebreaker period, English added an escape to take the advantage. In the next 30 second period, Maple could not escape, dropping the bout.

One of the most successful wrestlers in program history, Maple posted an overall record of 127-25, including a 25-7 mark in his redshirt senior campaign. The Wichita, Kan., native is the 25th Sooner to become a three-time All-American, doing so in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Maple took the 141-pound title in 2013, becoming the first Sooner in eight years to win an NCAA crown, finishing with a perfect 31-0 record. Additionally, Maple won three straight Big 12 titles (2012-14).

Session six of the NCAA Championships is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT Saturday. In the 174-pound final, OU’s No. 2 seed Andrew Howe will battle No. 1 seed Chris Perry of Oklahoma State for an individual title in the third meeting of the Bedlam foes this season. The session will air on ESPN.
