NORMAN, Okla.— The No. 17 Oklahoma women’s tennis team dropped their Big 12 opener as they fell to No. 33 Texas Tech (11-6, 1-2 Big 12) 5-2, Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners (10-3, 0-1 Big 12) dropped just their second doubles point of the season as they fell on courts two and three. Seniors Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie were the lone win in doubles for OU with an 8-6 win over Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo.

“We’re not as good of a doubles team outdoors,” OU women’s tennis head coach David Mullins said. “We’ve proven that the last two times out. Tulsa wasn’t a fluke, we’re just not good outdoors. We’ve got to find a way to get better outdoors because that’s what we’ll be from here on out.”

The singles order for the match was shuffled as the Sooners were without Ritchie, who has compiled an 11-1 record at the No. 1 and 2 positions this season.

“It changes everything for us,” Mullins said. “We lose one of our best points. She gave us everything she could in doubles but it just wasn’t worth putting her in singles.“

Freshman Morgan Chumney earned the first point of the night for Oklahoma with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Nikki Sanders.

Senior Hermon Brhane followed suit, tying the match at 2, with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kenna Kilgo at the No. 1 position.

Those would be the only points scored for the Sooners as the Red Raiders won on courts two, four, five and six.

“We gave ourselves a chance but we need everything to align perfectly and that rarely happens,” Mullins said. “Morgan had a big win tonight and it was great to see her get a win like that over a quality player.”

The Sooners will be back on the court again Sunday, March 23, as they take on the Horned Frogs of TCU at noon.
