NORMAN, Okla. -- Two Sooners secured individual titles at the 2014 Big 12 Championship on Saturday night inside McCasland Field House as the 14th-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team finished second with a total of 63.5 points.

OU finished second behind two-time defending champion Oklahoma State (98.5) and ahead of Iowa State (45.5) and West Virginia (26).

Winning conference crowns for the Sooners were redshirt seniors Jarrod Patterson at 125 pounds and Kendric Maple at 149 pounds.

At 125 pounds, No. 1 seed Patterson topped No. 2 Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State to claim his second conference title, providing a bookend to his career after he won as a freshman in 2010. Patterson and Klimara entered the final period tied at three before the Sooner accumulated 1:02 of riding time to take the bout by a 4-3 decision, bringing his season record to 18-2.

“I always fight to win,” Patterson said. “The top is one of my better positions. I feel like I have confidence there and if it comes down to me having to ride somebody out, I’m always feeling more confident about it.”

With a 6-3 decision of No. 2 seed Josh Kindig at 149 pounds, OU’s Kendric Maple claimed his third straight Big 12 title. Maple, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, won in 2012 and 2013 at 141 pounds. Maple registered two takedowns, an escape and captured the riding time point in the win. On the season, Maple is 22-4.

“It’s an honor and a blessing to win three Big 12 titles,” Maple said. “It’s been a long time coming. It’s great to get a win in my last time at the Field House. I’ve dealt with a lot of adversity this season, and it feels good to go out in the Big 12s on top. Now I feel prepared going into NCAAs.”

Claiming runner-up finishes for the Sooners were Cody Brewer, Justin DeAngelis, Travis Rutt and Andrew Howe.

Brewer fell to No. 1 seed Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State by an 8-1 decision at 133 pounds. The redshirt sophomore also finished second to Morrison last season.

At 157 pounds, redshirt junior and No. 2 seed DeAngelis, ranked No. 17 in InterMat’s latest poll, held strong with first-ranked Dieringer, eventually falling by an 8-3 decision.

The 197-pound match was one of the most intense of the night as it took several tiebreaker periods to decide a winner. The bout was tied at 1 following three periods, and Gadson went on to take the title after having five seconds of riding time to win by a 4-3 decision in TB-2.

In a bout filled with controversy, No. 2 Chris Perry defeated No. 1 Howe by decision, 3-2. The referees awarded Howe a couple of takedowns before reversing the calls following review. The loss was Howe’s first of the season. On Dec. 1, Howe handed Perry his only loss of the season.

Redshirt senior Nick Lester and redshirt freshman Clark Glass, both No. 3 seeds, took third place for the Sooners with wins over wrestlers from West Virginia. Lester downed No. 1 seed Colin Johnston with a 17-0 technical fall at 141 pounds, while Glass defeated No. 4 Ross Renzi by decision, 4-2.

Next up the Sooners host the 2014 NCAA Championships scheduled for March 20-22 inside Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. A total of seven OU wrestlers qualified for the event following their performances at Big 12s, including Patterson, Brewer, Lester, Maple, DeAngelis, Howe and Rutt.
