Stevens held UCLA's powerful offense in check, limiting the Bruins to a tie for its season-low output of three runs. She struck out seven, walked three and allowed five hits.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – In a tightly-played contest that would not have looked out of place in a June matchup in Oklahoma City, No. 18/13 Oklahoma (9-5) was defeated by No. 8/9 UCLA, 3-2, on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh Friday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Both pitchers were in control during the contest as OU sophomore Kelsey Stevens went toe-to-toe with UCLA’s Ally Carda. Stevens held the Bruins (12-0) to three runs to match a season-low for the squad, and only two of those were earned. She struck out seven and walked three while allowing five hits, but dropped to 6-3 on the year.
Carda was just a little bit better Friday. She struck out 10 and walked two with five hits allowed, but both of the runs she yielded were unearned.
After a scoreless first inning, sophomore Erin Miller led off the Sooners’ second with a triple to left center. It looked as though UCLA would escape undamaged after two quick outs, but sophomore Leslie Miller kept the inning alive with a walk. Leslie Miller then used a delayed steal to force a throw down to second. Erin Miller broke for home and was able to score as the throw got away from the Bruins catcher.
UCLA tied the game up at 1-1 in the next inning when Stephany LaRosa hit a two-out run-scoring double.
The fourth inning passed scoreless, but the Sooners took advantage of another UCLA error to move ahead 2-1 in the fifth.
Junior Jessica Vest led off the frame by sending a high popup beyond second base. Tara Mueller raced in from center field but misplayed the ball, and Vest hustled her way into second base. Two batters later, junior Georgia Casey singled up the middle to score Vest and capitalize on the error.
The Bruins fought back in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game on a pair of doubles within a span of three batters.
In the seventh inning, Mueller reached on a one-out single to left field. A fielding error on Casey enabled Carda to reach safely and advance Mueller to third, while Delaney Spaulding delivered the game-winning hit on a deep single to right center.
Oklahoma wraps up play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday with a single game against Syracuse. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT.
