Norman, Okla.--The No. 20 Oklahoma women’s tennis team travels to Albuquerque, N.M. this weekend to take on New Mexico and No. 49 Utah.
This is the highest ranking for the Sooners (7-1) since 2012 when they debuted at No. 25 in the preseason rankings.
Going into the weekend OU has yet to drop a doubles point. Senior Whitney Ritchie is undefeated and has only dropped two sets so far this season.
"Our doubles has been outstanding all year but at some point we will need to win a match without it,” head coach David Mullins said. “I don't expect that to be the case this weekend but we need to be prepared for everything."
The Sooners will be making their second road trip in a row after traveling to Arkansas last weekend. In Fayetteville, the team extended their win streak, defeating No. 44 Arkansas and No. 30 Purdue.
New Mexico (6-2) is currently coming off a 6-1 loss to No. 21 Texas Tech. The Lobos and Sooners have met 16 times, with the last meeting coming in 2005 when New Mexico won 6-1.
Utah (5-1) has won five straight matches since losing their first at No. 37 St. Mary’s. Oklahoma and Utah have met just twice with the Sooners winning in 1987 and 1988.
Utah will be the eighth ranked team Oklahoma has faced this season. The Sooners are currently 6-1 against ranked teams with their lone loss coming against then No. 12 Alabama in January.
"We have some tough tests this weekend away from home against two very well coached teams,” Mullins said. “It has been a quick turnaround this week but I expect us to continue our fine form in both single and doubles.”
The Sooners face New Mexico Friday Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and take on Utah Saturday Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
