COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In the semifinals of the EAS Sports Nutrition/NWCA Division I National Duals presented by Hibiclens and the United States Marine Corps in honor of Cliff Keen, the 11th-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team (11-4) fell to No. 4 Cornell (12-0), 23-20, Monday afternoon inside St. John Arena.
OU and Cornell split the dual's 10 bouts, but two pins for Big Red proved to be the difference. The Sooners started the day in a 6-0 hole after No. 1 Nahshon Garrett of Cornell caught freshman Sean Williams in a pin in 1:05 at 125 pounds.
At 133 pounds, No. 7 Cody Brewer registered OU’s first win with an 11-2 major decision of No. 15 Mark Grey before redshirt senior Nick Lester gave OU the lead with an upset of No. 7 Mike Nevinger after pinning him in 2:16 at 141 pounds.
No. 1 Andrew Howe defeated Jesse Shanaman of Cornell by major decision, 18-6, at 174 pounds. No. 5 Travis Rutt and Ross Larson closed out the dual with a pair of decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, but it was not enough to close the gap against Cornell. Rutt won over Jace Bennett, 5-2, while Larson topped Jacob Aiken-Phillips, 6-4.
OU also dropped matches at 149, 157, 165 and 184 pounds. It took two sudden victory periods before No. 6 Chris Villalonga of Cornell downed OU’s second-ranked Kendric Maple, 3-1.
Dryden Dennis fell to No. 10 Brian Realbuto by a 13-1 major decision, and Clark Glass lost to No. 14 Dylan Palacio also by major decision, 10-0. At 184 pounds, Cornell registered its second fall of the afternoon when No. 3 Gabe Dean pinned Alec Iacovelli in 1:57.
The Sooners will compete for third place in the event against No. 13 Ohio State at 3 p.m. CT Monday afternoon.
