OU Wins Twice at National Duals Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 11th-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team recorded two dual wins in the first day of action at the EAS Sports Nutrition/NWCA Division I National Duals presented by Hibiclens and the United States Marine Corps in honor of Cliff Keen inside St. John Arena.

The Sooners faced Bloomsburg in the first round, winning by a score of 21-15 before topping Central Michigan 25-16 in the quarterfinals. OU will face No. 4 Cornell in the semifinals at 12 p.m. CT on Monday.

Against Bloomsburg, OU started the dual with five straight wins. Redshirt senior and No. 7 Jarrod Patterson made his first appearance for the Sooners since suffering a knee injury on Jan. 19 against Northern Iowa. In the 125-pound bout, he defeated Sean Boylan by decision, 5-0.

No. 7 Cody Brewer downed Nick Wilcox by an 11-4 decision in the 133-pound match, while Nick Lester recorded a major decision, 11-2, of Elliot Zackoski at 141 pounds.

By a 17-3 major decision, No. 2 Kendric Maple defeated Brian Nelson at 149 pounds, and in the 157-pound bout, Justin DeAngelis registered a 12-11 decision of Kevin Hartnett after securing the riding time point.

Bloomsburg went on to win four of the last five bouts, with OU’s only other win coming at 184 pounds as Andrew Howe, ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, topped Sam Shirey by major decision, 20-7.

At 165 pounds, No. 16 Josh Veltre needed a tiebreaker period to defeat OU redshirt freshman Clark Glass by a 5-2 decision. Mike Dessino beat Derek Geiges by a 6-0 decision at 174 pounds, while No. 6 Richard Petty recorded a 4:17 fall of OU No. 5 Travis Rutt at 197 pounds.

The heavyweight division saw the second match to go into extra periods during the dual as Bloomsburg’s Justin Grant topped redshirt freshman Ross Larson with a takedown in the sudden victory period to win 4-2.

The dual between the Sooners and Central Michigan went back and forth as OU won six of the 10 matches.

Patterson secured his second win of the day with a 9-2 decision of Corey Keener at 125 pounds. At 149 pounds, Maple added a fall in 2:36 of Scott Mattingly to give the Sooners a 9-6 lead.

In the 165-pound match, Glass defeated Zack Cline by a 5-2 decision, and Howe registered a 4-2 decision of No. 9 Mike Ottinger.

Central Michigan claimed matches at 133, 141, 157 and 184 pounds, starting with No. 14 Joe Roth adding a 10-7 decision of Brewer.

At 141 pounds, No. 10 Zach Horan topped Lester by a 4-2 decision, while Dryden Dennis fell to Luke Smith by a 12-0 decision at 157 pounds. Craig Kelliher won by a 2:23 fall of Alec Iacovelli, who made his first dual appearance for OU.

Depending on the outcome of OU’s matchup with Cornell, the Sooners will compete for either first place or third place against No. 1 Minnesota or No. 13 Ohio State at 3 p.m. CT on Monday.
