Pendley recorded Oklahoma's only hit against Arizona State. She spoiled the no-hit bid with a single to deep short with two outs in the top of the seventh, finishing 1-3 on the day.
PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 11/7 Oklahoma (4-3) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Friday night as it lost at No. 5/5 Arizona State, 7-0, at the Littlewood Classic.
The OU offense was held in check by ASU (8-0) starter Dallas Escobedo in suffering its first shutout of the season.
Oklahoma’s first baserunner didn’t come until the fifth inning when sophomore Whitney Ellis reached on an error by Nikki Girard at second base. The team’s lone hit came with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as junior Shelby Pendley grounded one to deep short and beat out the throw at first base.
Escobedo struck out 12 batters and walked none in improving to 4-0 on the season.
The game was scoreless until the second inning when Haley Steele led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
Arizona State’s lead grew to 5-0 thanks to a four-run fourth inning. Elizabeth Caporuscio hit a two-run single, while Chelsea Gonzales added a two-run homer.
The following inning, Amber Freeman added an RBI single while a wild pitch allowed the seventh run to come home for the Sun Devils.
Sophomore Kelsey Stevens suffered her first loss of the season as her record dropped to 2-1. She lasted 4.1 innings but gave up seven runs, six of which were earned. She struck out three and walked one while allowing seven hits.
Junior Maggie Ham relieved Stevens in the fifth inning and got the final two outs of the inning. Sophomore Taylor Dewbery closed out the game by throwing the sixth inning, walking one.
The Sooners are back in action Saturday against SIU-Edwardsville. First pitch is set for 12:15 p.m. CT.
