NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team added its ninth and tenth Big 12 weekly awards of the 2014 season on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Haley Scaman and freshman Chayse Capps each nabbed conference awards after career-high performances against No. 3 LSU last weekend. Scaman was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the first time in her career, while Capps earned her third Newcomer of the Week accolade.
With OU's awards, the Sooners now own six more weekly honors this season than any other team in the conference (second: WVU, four). Capps leads all Oklahoma competitors with a team-high three honors alone this year.
Haley Scaman picked up her first Gymnast of the Week honor and sixth overall weekly award after posting scores of 9.9 or higher on all three events she competed in against LSU, including career-high efforts on both bars and floor. She earned or tied for event titles on bars (9.925) and floor exercise (9.975) and earned a 9.9 on vault. The Riverside, Ill., native has not earned a score below 9.9 on vault this season in five performances. Scaman’s efforts helped lead Oklahoma to its highest scores of the season on vault (49.525), bars (49.475) and floor (49.525).
Capps' efforts were key in OU's strong performance as well. She had another standout meet for Oklahoma, earning career-high scores on vault and floor for the Sooners. Capps opened the meet on vault, sticking a new career-high 9.95 routine to finish second overall at a meet loaded with outstanding vaults. She then earned a 9.9 on floor exercise, tying her career-high and putting her at fifth overall at the meet.
Oklahoma is back in action this weekend on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the annual Metroplex Challenge. The Sooners will face LSU, No. 17 Arizona and Kentucky at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas at 7 p.m.
