NORMAN, Okla.-- A dominating doubles performance followed by impressive singles play led the No. 28 Oklahoma women’s tennis team to a 5-2 win over No. 42 Illinois (4-2) Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
"We started really well in doubles," head coach David Mullins said. "We played really well and we know there are other levels we can go to which is really exciting."
After dropping their first game, freshman Morgan Chumney and sophomore Emma Devine went on a 6-0 run to win the set, 6-1.
Not two minutes later, seniors Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster clinched the doubles point for Oklahoma (5-1) with a 6-1 victory.
Ritchie, now 6-0 in singles play, defeated Melissa Kopinski 6-2, 6-1 to give the Sooners their first singles point and the 2-0 lead.
Senior Hermon Brhane gave Oklahoma a third point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Allison Falkin. Lancaster followed up with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Misia Kedzierski to clinch the match for the Sooners.
"Whitney and Hermon played two tough players and had routine wins," Mullins said. "I really wasn't expecting that. Whitney kept her great play up and Mia did a great job closing out that second set."
The Sooners will head to Fayetteville, Ark. for a two-match weekend against No. 49 Arkansas and No. 30 Purdue, Feb. 14-15.
The team will be back in action at home March 21 to open Big 12 play against Texas Tech.
