Oklahoma Thrives in Field Events
January 31, 2014

Fayetteville, Ark.--University of Oklahoma sophomore Austin Perry continued the Sooners’ streak of reaching career bests Friday night when he won the shot put competition at the Razorback Invitational, held in the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Center.

The 200-meter dash featured two Sooners finishing in the top 10. Waymon Storey had a sixth-place finish and freshman Daye Shon Roberson finished seventh with a time of 23.87. Oklahoma had 10 athletes finish in the top 10 of their events.

In the Sooners’ first three meets, 13 athletes have improved upon their career bests.

Perry’s first round throw of 55-9.50 would have been good for his indoor career high. Through the next three rounds, the sophomore threw farther and farther until he reached 61-0.25 for the win and a new career high.

In women’s shot put, Brooke Garner (48-9.50) and Avione Allgood (48-3.25) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Oklahoma’s success carried over in the field events to pole vault, where Everette Favor recorded a career best. Favor cleared 17-4.50 and placed second.

Freshman Emily Savage cleared a best in the pole vault, 12-0.50, for a sixth place finish.

Sooner entries advanced to tomorrow’s 60-meter dash finals and semifinals. Cessily Jones recorded a 7.62 to advance to the semifinals while Waymon Storey posted a 6.92 to advance to the finals.
