NORMAN, Okla. -- The No.10 Oklahoma men’s tennis team starts its 2014 season Tuesday, Jan. 21, when it hosts the Wichita State Shockers at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
OU head coach John Roddick’s squad enters the 2014 season as two-time defending Big 12 Champions. Oklahoma is the first team to win back-to-back Big 12 titles since 2009.
After recording their best fall season to date, the team expects the same results this spring.
“We had a really good fall, the best fall we’ve ever had,” Roddick said. “Our goal is to always stay the same as far as the Big 12 is concerned. We’ve won it the last two years and we’ll be disappointed if we don’t. Our guys expect that and we expect that as a staff, so everyone is on the same page.”
This marks the fourth consecutive year the Sooners landed a top-25 preseason ranking. The team enters this season fresh off its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Sooners advanced to the tournament’s Round of 16 in 2013.
“From a national stand point we have earlier things we need to worry about with the ITA Kick-Off right around the corner and several tough matches in between, and then hopefully the Round of 16 at National Team Indoors.”
Four Sooners earned spots in the International Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division 1 rankings. Senior Guillermo Alcorta and sophomore Axel Alvarez both grabbed top-10 positions at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Junior Dane Webb was No. 40 and freshman Andrew Harris appeared on the list for the first time at No. 37.
Two Sooner doubles tandems also received spots in the rankings. Harris and Webb debut at No. 18 while junior Nick Papac and Alvarez start 2014 at No. 25.
Admission to Tuesday's match is free.
