NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma women’s and men's tennis teams grabbed top-50 rankings in the initial Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I Rankings released late Thursday.
The Sooner women’s squad, coached by David Mullins, was ranked No. 34 and the men, coached by John Roddick, grabbed a top-10 ranking, debuting at No. 10.
Defending national champions Stanford and Virginia took the top spot for the women and men, respectively.
Additionally, five OU singles and three doubles teams were ranked by the association.
Hermon Brhane ranked 106th in women's singles.
Seniors Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster were listed 50th in women's doubles.
Senior Guillermo Alcorta and sophomore Axel Alvarez Llamas debuted at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively in the ITA Top 125 Men's Singles Rankings. Junior Dane Webb was No. 40 and freshman Andrew Harris appeared for the first time at No. 37.
The duo of Harris and Webb were listed 18th in men’s doubles with redshirt junior Nick Papac and Alvarez pairing up to come in at No. 25.
The ITA ratings are calculated from results of fall tournaments. The next ITA NCAA Tennis Team Rankings will be announced Jan. 21.
The Oklahoma women host North Texas in their season opener at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion Sunday, Jan. 19, and the Sooner men face Wichita State in Norman on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
