Sooners in First in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- Six Sooners advanced to the semifinals and the fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team sits in first place after the first day of competition at the 32nd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational held inside the Las Vegas Convention Center.

A total of 33 teams are entered in the event, with 11 of them ranked in the latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. Behind the Sooners, who have 84.5 points, rounding out the top five are Nebraska (75.0), Michigan (72.5), Cornell (68.5) and Northern Iowa (61.5).

Nine of the 10 Sooners entered in the tournament are still competing, with six having a chance to win their respective weight classes.

Sooners who will participate in semifinal action Saturday after posting 3-0 records during the first day of the tournament include Jarrod Patterson (125), Cody Brewer (133), Nick Lester (141), Kendric Maple (149), Andrew Howe (174) and Travis Rutt (197).

Three Sooners are still alive in the consolation bracket, including Justin DeAngelis (157), Clark Glass (165) and Ross Larson (HWT). Danny Chaid (184) was eliminated from the tournament after recording two losses.

The final day of the invitational is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT with the fourth consolation round. Semifinals and the rest of the consolation rounds will start at 12 p.m. CT, while championship finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
