NORMAN, Okla. -- Offensive lineman Gabe Ikard was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year and a member of the Academic All-America Team for Division I football as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.

Ikard is the first OU football student-athlete in program history to be named Academic All-America of the Year and is the first to be named a three-time Academic All-American, having also claimed first-team honors last season and second-team honors as a sophomore in 2011.

Ikard joins Lana Moran (softball, 1999-00), Stacey Dales (women’s basketball, 2000-01) and Aaron Ivey (baseball, 2006-07) as sport Academic All-America of the Year honorees from the University of Oklahoma. Oklahoma has now landed an individual on the football Academic All-America squad each of the last four years. With Ikard's selection, it marks 14 consecutive years for OU to have an Academic All-American, the second longest string in school history.

A two-year team captain, Ikard has started 48 of 50 career games at both center and left guard. He leads the Sooners with 82 knockdown blocks and has not permitted a sack. Ikard makes the protection calls for an Oklahoma offense that ranks second in the Big 12 and 15th in the nation averaging 242.3 yards per game. The two-time All-Big 12 honoree is a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, both of which honor individuals for their performances on and off the field. Fans can vote online at www.SeniorClassAward.com through Dec. 16.

The Oklahoma City native was already named a 2013 National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award winner and will receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. In addition, he is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy as the top scholar-athlete in the nation. Ikard graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in May with bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies with a biological sciences theme and is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree from OU. Earlier this year, he was a participant in OU’s Study Abroad program, spending time in Ireland.

The 24 members of the Capital One Division I Academic All-America Football First Team combined for a 3.715 G.P.A. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
