NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma redshirt senior Travis Rutt has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Month for competition from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1, the conference announced Monday.
Rutt, a redshirt senior from New Prague, Minn., is competing for the Sooners for the first time this season after transferring from Wisconsin and redshirting last year.
In the Bedlam dual against in-state rival and fifth-ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday, Dec. 1, No. 5 Rutt claimed the only bonus point victory of the dual via a 12-3 major decision over No. 10 Blake Rosholt.
The extra point at 197 pounds proved to be the difference for fourth-ranked OU as it rallied from a 15-3 deficit to take the dual 16-15. The Sooners won the first match but dropped five straight to the Cowboys before winning the final four of the contest. Rutt’s match was the third of four wins for OU to close out the dual.
On the season, Rutt is a perfect 8-0, with a 5-0 mark in dual competition. Five of Rutt’s victories this year have come with bonus points, including two major decisions and three falls.
Additionally, Rutt won an individual title at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 9, to help the Sooners to their 15th straight victory in the event.
The honor is the first of Rutt’s career as a Sooner. During his junior season at Wisconsin, Rutt was recognized as the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.
