NORMAN, Okla. -- On a day when the opponent took away Oklahoma’s main scoring threat, the Sooners showed they weren’t just a one-man band.

No. 11 Oklahoma powered past the Wichita State Shockers, 89-70, in a Preseason WNIT game at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m really proud of the fact that we scored 46 points in the first half and Vegas (Aaryn Ellenberg) had only one basket,” OU head coach Sherri Coale said. “We have been so dependent on her for years to kind of get us going and carry the load. Other guys had to score and they did.

“We never had a sense of panic about us and I thought that was fantastic. We fed the ball to the post and our bigs were there. They were determined and adamant, both in rebounding and finishing.”

Sharane Campbell scored a game-high and career-high 24 points as the Sooners bullied their way to the paint when its perimeter offense was stalled.

“I just do what I do best,” Campbell said. “They tell me to drive, so I drive. I get fouled and shoot free throws a lot. I love free throws.”

Campbell was 9-for-9 from the free throw line and had 14 first-half points.

“Sharane getting to the rim that was huge as well,” Coale added. “I’m just really proud of the team effort and I feel like we had a lot of guys who rose to the occasion and had really big games tonight.”

Morgan Hook scored 15 points and Nicole Griffin added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Oklahoma led 20-17 with 11:44 remaining in the first before going on a 23-2 scoring run over the next seven minutes to pull away before a Shockers’ run to end the half.

Oklahoma led 46-34 at halftime.

The Sooners struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 27 percent, but made 60 percent of its 2-point attempts and hit 27 of 31 at the free throw line.

“They were really establishing their positions so just getting into the paint, our 3 weren’t really open for us,” Hook said. “It shows our toughness and that we usually look to Aaryn (Ellenberg). If she isn’t getting her shots, then someone else has to step up. And I think we stepped up in every position.”

Despite its four leading scorers getting into foul trouble with 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Sooners’ continued to roll in the second half.

Aaryn Ellenberg made 3-of-4 3-pointers in the last 10 minutes of the game, to quash the Shockers’ attempts of a comeback. Ellenberg finished with 14 points.

“She had two transition 3s, which were in the second half,” Wichita State head coach Jody Adams said. “We were tired and we didn’t match to her so that’s when she got her two in the second half.”

Oklahoma faces Gonzaga in a Preseason WNIT Semifinal Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center.
