MOORE, Okla. -- The fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team began its 2013-14 regular season with a victory as it defeated Shorter University 34-12 Saturday at Southmoore High School in Moore, Okla.

Admission for the dual was free, but the United Way was on site accepting donations for its tornado relief fund.

OU’s first two matches ended with tech fall victories by redshirt sophomore Cody Brewer and redshirt senior Nick Lester. In the 133-pound matchup Brewer defeated Shorter University senior Clint Jones by a 2:49 tech fall, 19-4. Lester topped sophomore DeMarcus Thomas also by a 2:49 tech fall, 21-4.

The 149-pound bout was close as redshirt freshman Dryden Dennis won by decision, 6-0, over senior Brandon Dyer. The score remained tied at zero until Dennis recorded a two-point near fall right before the end of the second period.

Redshirt junior Justin DeAngelis claimed a 2:04 fall over sophomore TJ Duncan to claim the 157-pound match.

In the 165-pound match, sophomore Wally Figaro of Shorter University struck first against redshirt junior Derek Geiges with a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Geiges chose the bottom position to start the second period and registered an escape to cut the deficit to 2-1. Geiges then added a takedown to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the second. Geiges went on to win by decision, 6-2.

Redshirt freshman Clark Glass faced redshirt sophomore Dalton Lane in the 174-pound matchup. At the end of the first period, Glass held an 11-2 advantage over Lane. In the second period, Glass added a three-point near fall and went on to win by tech fall with 1:04 left in the second period, 17-2.

Shorter University junior Terrance Smith started the second period of the 184-pound bout with an escape to take a 1-0 lead over OU freshman Stone Drulman. Smith claimed the match by a 5:39 fall.

The 197-pound match pitted OU’s redshirt senior Travis Rutt against redshirt junior Andrew Ewers. Rutt recorded a takedown in the first and held a 2-1 lead at the end of the period. The second period was scoreless, and Rutt elected to start in the bottom position in the third. Rutt recorded an escape to take a 3-1 lead. Rutt added 2:06 of riding time and went on to win by decision, 4-1.

Ross Larson struck first with a takedown and added a three-point near fall in the first period of the heavyweight match to lead 5-0 over sophomore Marlen Morgan of Shorter. Larson added five more takedowns in the match and recorded 3:19 of riding time to win by major decision, 16-3.

Oklahoma forfeited in the 125 pound weight class against freshman Hayden Randolph of Shorter University. 

The Sooners return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, as they welcome Oklahoma City University to McCasland Field House.
