NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team recorded 16 birdies against just six bogeys Sunday and leads the 15-team Alamo Invitational after 18 holes of play in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament is being played at the 7,206-yard, par-72 Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
All five Sooners shot par or better, and all five are in the top 27 out of 81 individual competitors. OU, which shot a 10-under 278, leads second-place Arkansas by one stroke and third-place Florida by two shots with two rounds remaining. The Sooners won last year’s Alamo Invitational.
Freshman Alexandra Kaui led the Sooner squad, logging the first bogey-free round of her collegiate career. Kaui carded four birdies and finished the day with a 68 (-4), tying her for third place. She is just one shot out of the lead.
Anne-Catherine Tanguay was close behind, shooting a 3-under 69 (-3), her best round this season in relation to par. The senior was 1 over par through five holes but played the final 13 at 4 under. Tanguay is tied for ninth place.
Kaitlyn Rohrback continued her strong season. The OU senior countered three bogeys with a team-high five birdies en route to a first-round 70 (-2). Rohrback is tied for 13th place.
Emily Collins finished the round tied for 18th place after recording a 1-under 71. The senior’s lone bogey came on the third hole, and she played the final 15 at 2 under (birdies on holes 13 and 18).
Senior Chirapat Jao-Javanil’s only bogey came on the first hole. She played the final 17 holes at 1 under par to finish with an even-par 72 and is tied for 27th place. This marked the first round this season that all five Sooner competitors have shot par or better.
Fifth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was excited about her team’s play.
“We played solid today, especially on the back nine,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We made a lot of putts and stayed within our game plan. All five girls played solid and I’m really proud of them.”
The Sooners, who are ranked fifth nationally by Golfstat, tee off Monday morning starting at 9:50 CT. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
