NORMAN, Okla. – Strong pitching and lively bats enabled the University of Oklahoma softball to cruise its way past Butler Community College, 12-0, Thursday night at Marita Hynes Stadium. The Sooners have now thrown five shutouts in seven fall games and have scored at least seven runs in every contest.

Oklahoma got all the runs it would need in the top of the first.

After Kelsey Stevens struck out the side in the top of the first, the Sooners put up two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Destinee Martinez drew a one-out walk before junior Shelby Pendley drilled a double off the wall in right center and took third on the throw. Senior Brittany Williams followed and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Pendley.

Stevens continued to keep the Grizzlies in check over the next two innings as she retired all nine batters she faced via strikeout. Eight of the nine strikeouts were swinging, and she needed just 44 pitches to get through three innings.

Oklahoma padded its lead in the fourth inning with three runs.

Junior Callie Parsons led off with a single and took third when Butler’s left fielder was unable to catch fellow Lauren Chamberlain’s fly ball. With runners on second and third, Martinez then blooped a double into shallow left field to plate Parsons.

With runners again on second and third, Williams laced a single to right field to drive in two more runs and up her RBI total to three.

Leading 5-0, the Sooners doubled up their lead with a five-run sixth inning.

Pendley hit a one-out single and Williams followed with a single of her own. Two batters later, sophomore Paris Townsend drew a walk to fill the bases with two outs. It appeared as though Butler was going to emerge from the inning unscathed when sophomore Kady Self lifted a pop up to shallow right field, however the Grizzlies second baseman was unable to make the catch and two runs came in to score.

Following the error, sophomore Leslie Miller stepped in and unleashed a mammoth home run to left field on a full count. The three-run blast cleared the scoreboard and pushed the OU lead to 10-0.

Even though the Sooners led 10-0 after six and a half innings, Oklahoma batted in the bottom of the seventh and added its final two runs.

With one out and one on, sophomore Paris Townsend singled down the right field line. Oklahoma then loaded the bases when Butler’s left field committed an error on sophomore Erin Miller’s fly ball. A passed ball then enabled Self to score before a sacrifice fly by senior Javen Henson brought home OU’s final run.

The run support was plenty for the Sooners’ pitching staff.

After Stevens dominated in her three innings of work, junior Maggie Ham struck out one, walked one and gave up a hit in her two innings in the circle. Sophomore Taylor Dewbery closed things out in the final two frames by striking out four and surrendering no hits.

The Sooners close out their fall schedule next Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. against St. Gregory’s.
