NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma cross country program is set to compete this Saturday, Oct. 19, as both the men and women’s teams head to Terre Haute, Ind., to run in the Pre-National Invitational.
The meet is a precursor to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, held on the same course on Nov. 23. Both OU teams expect to have seven runners compete.
This will be the first race the No. 3 regionally-ranked Oklahoma men have competed in since the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28.
“The break has been good,” said Associate Head Coach Jason Dunn. “We have put in some good training and we are excited to go out there and race again.”
Scheduled to compete for the OU men are Abbabiya Simbassa, who finished fifth overall at Roy Griak, Brandon Doughty, Dan Schubert, Alex Deir, Patrick Gomez, Eric Graf and Kyle Polman.
The Sooner women will enter the race coming off of a two week break in competition. Scheduled to compete are Elena Arriaza, Hilary Krein, Kelsey McKee, Lane Maguire, Marissa Codispodi, Bryce Perry and Ashley Guidot.
Dunn points out that this weekend will be the most competitive meet of the season up to this point and one his team has been looking forward to.
“This is certainly the most competitive meet we will have been in with both teams,” Dunn explained. “This is an opportunity for us to go up against some great teams and try to capitalize on all of the work we have put in over the last couple of weeks.”
The men’s team will race in the 8,000 meter Blue race at 11:00 a.m. CT. The Blue race features a stacked field of 52 teams consisting of 9 teams ranked in the top 30 according to the United State Track and Field Cross Country Association (USTFCCA).
The women’s team will race in the 6,000 meter White race which features 35 teams and is slated to begin at 12:55 p.m. CT.
Complete results and a full recap of the race will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly after the event's conclusion. A live race broadcast of the Pre-Nationals Meet will also be available at Flotrack.org.
