Sooners Shut Out North Texas, 10-0
October 16, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. – A five-run fourth inning and four-run fifth inning proved to be the difference Wednesday night as the University of Oklahoma softball team ran its fall record to 6-0 with a 10-0 win over North Texas at Marita Hynes Stadium.

Juniors Lauren Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley each hit two-run home runs in the win, while all five pitchers on OU’s roster saw valuable time in the circle for the defending national champions.

An RBI double from senior Brittany Williams got the scoring started in the first inning.

North Texas threatened in the third inning as it got a pair of runners into scoring position with just one out, but after a ground out, sophomore Kelsey Stevens came on in relief and got a swinging strikeout to keep the Sooners’ one-run lead intact.

Oklahoma then broke the game open in the fourth inning.

With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Kady Self lifted a fly ball to right field that deflected off the fielder’s glove for an error, enabling one run to score. Pendley then delivered the big blow with a double to the gap in left center to make it 4-0.

Two batters later, Williams picked up her second and third RBI of the game when she singled back up the middle to extend OU’s lead to 6-0.

The Mean Green again tried to get on the board in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with only one out, but Stevens posted back-to-back strikeouts to keep the shutout going.

Oklahoma then padded its lead with four more runs in the fifth thanks to the long ball.

With two outs, sophomore Erin Miller lined a double past the center fielder. Chamberlain then stepped in and hit a mammoth home run to left center, her third of the fall season.

Following Chamberlain, Self reached base on an error thanks to an error on the right fielder for the second time in the game. Like she did in the previous inning, Pendley once again made the Mean Green pay as she pulled a shot to right field that cleared the fences and put the Sooners on top 10-0.

The exclamation point was put on the win in the top of the seventh when sophomore Paris Townsend made a highlight-reel catch in left field. With two on and one out, a fly ball was lifted down the left field line in foul territory. With the ball slicing away from her, Townsend laid out with full extension to make the diving catch.

Junior Georgia Casey got the start in the circle for the Sooners and threw the first two innings with a pair of strikeouts, one hit allowed and one walked batter. Fellow junior Maggie Ham came on to pitch start the third and got two outs before yielding to Stevens.

The transfer from Stanford closed out the third and completed the next two innings with five strikeouts. Sophomore Taylor Dewbery was given the sixth inning and she allowed a lone walk, while fellow sophomore Leslie Miller closed the game by striking out one and allowing two hits in the seventh.

The Sooners return to the field on Oct. 24 when they host Butler Community College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
