NORMAN, Okla. -- After a slow start on the front nine, the fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma Women’s Golf team was able to string together eight birdies on the final nine holes to record a 292 (+4) in the first round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday. The Sooners are tied for fourth place among 18 squads at the 6,285-yard, par-72 UNC Finley Golf Course.

Senior Kaitlyn Rohrback led the Sooners with an opening-round 71 (-1). Rohrback caught fire late, registering four birdies in her last five holes to move into a tie for 10th place out of 96 golfers, four shots behind leader Antonia Scherer of Vanderbilt.

Following Rohrback for OU was Alexandra Kaui, who recorded a 1-over-par 73. Playing in the No. 1 spot for the second straight tournament, the freshman struggled on the front nine with four bogeys but finished the round with birdies on her last two holes. Kaui is tied for 22nd.

Seniors Emily Collins and Chirapat Jao-Javanil each shot a first-round 74 (+2) and are tied for 36th place. Fellow senior Anne-Catherine Tanguay is tied for 42nd place after carding a 75 (+3).

No. 16 Vanderbilt leads the tournament by one shot over Duke after turning in a 3-under round. Auburn is in third place at 3 over, one stroke ahead of OU and Mississippi.

Fifth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said her team was able to find comfort on the back nine.

“We got off to a slow start this morning and made some putts coming in,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We had a great stretch of holes on the back nine and we’re looking to continue our momentum into tomorrow’s round.”

The Sooners will begin round two on Saturday at 8:54 a.m. CT.
