Freshman Sam Gray joins junior Nick Papac as a native Oklahoman playing for the Sooners. Sam grew up in Tulsa and plans to major in both biology and Spanish. Sam is a walk-on with high hopes of making the starting lineup this season.
Why did you choose to come to OU?
Sam Gray: “It’s close to home and I’ve been a Sooner fan my whole life. I also looked at Arkansas, TCU and UMKC, but I’ve liked OU even since I was a little kid. Even in my room, until I moved out, I had OU pillows and OU football stuff. I’ve always been an OU fan.”
Where is the coolest place you’ve been and why?
SG: “Spain. I went to Europe over Spring Break last year and I thought it was cool because of the culture.”
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
SG: “When I’m not playing tennis I like to go out to my ranch in Tahlequah and fish.”
If you could play tennis against anyone who would it be and why?
SG: “Pete Sampras. Just so I could see if I could return his serve.”
When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up?
SG: “I wanted to be a doctor or a professional baseball player. I played baseball growing up but I quit to focus on tennis.”
Who is your tennis idol?
SG: “I like Lleyton Hewitt because he’s older but he still competes hard and he’s never easy to beat. He was number one in the world in his early 20s and now he’s 33 and he’s ranked No. 54 in the world. Most guys would have probably given up, but he still goes out and plays. I just like how he goes out and fights.”
What are your plans after college?
SG: “I want to be an ER Doctor.”
Who is your favorite musician and why?
SG: “I really like Kid Cudi. He’s just so different than all the other rappers and I like the way he sounds.”
