NORMAN, Okla. – In a rematch of last year’s NCAA Regional, the University of Oklahoma softball team swept a doubleheader against the University of Arkansas Sunday at Marita Hynes Stadium. The Sooners, who took both games a year ago by a combined score of 24-6, won game one of the fall matchup, 7-0, then came back with a 7-1 victory in game two.
Oklahoma returns to the field on Oct. 16 with a matchup at home at 6 p.m. against North Texas.
Game One – Oklahoma 7, Arkansas 0
The Sooners scored in each of the first four innings en route to a shutout victory.
Energized by a terrific diving catch in the top of the first by sophomore left field Kady Self, Oklahoma struck quickly as three walks loaded up the bases in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Leslie Miller pulled an RBI single through the left side to open the scoring, while fellow sophomore Whitney Ellis recorded a sacrifice fly to left later in the frame to make it 2-0 in favor of OU.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the second inning as senior Javen Henson scored on an RBI single by fellow senior Destinee Martinez. Junior Shelby Pendley followed with a single of her own, driving home junior Lauren Chamberlain.
Henson hit her first home run of the fall season in the fifth, launching a solo shot to left center to stake the Sooners to a 5-0 lead.
Oklahoma picked up its final two runs in the fourth inning as Ellis delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded.
The seven runs were more than enough for the OU pitching staff. Sophomore Kelsey Stevens got the start and threw the first 4.1 innings of the game. She allowed just two hits, the first of which didn’t come until there was one out in the third inning. Stevens added two strikeouts in the win with no walks.
She was relieved by sophomore Taylor Dewbery who pitched 1.1 perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Georgia Casey closed things out, retiring the final four batters.
Game Two – Oklahoma 7, Arkansas 1
The first two innings of game two passed by scoreless before Oklahoma got on the board in the third inning.
Junior Callie Parsons got the inning started with a single to left field and Chamberlain followed by smashing a double to the gap in right center to make it 1-0. Henson then followed with a double of her own to plate Chamberlain and extend the lead to 2-0.
Oklahoma then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.
Martinez hit a one-out single and stole second before coming around to score when Self hit an RBI double to right field. Parsons came to bat next and hit a follow-up double down the left field line to make it 4-0 as Self scored. Chamberlain then drove Parsons home with a sharp single through the left side, while Henson later reached on a fielder’s choice to make it 6-0.
An RBI groundout from Martinez in the fifth inning closed out the OU scoring, while Arkansas added one run in the top of the seventh to prevent the shutout.
Four pitchers saw time in the circle for the Sooners, led by starting pitcher Maggie Ham. The junior tallied 2.2 innings with only one hit allowed and a strikeout.
Dewbery was up next with 1.2 innings of work that featured two strikeouts and a walk before yielding to sophomore Leslie Miller who walked one in an inning of work.
Casey was tasked with closing the game out and she walked one and allowed one run on three hits in the final 1.2 innings of work.
