NORMAN, Okla. -- Former Oklahoma men's gymnast and current USA National Team member Jake Dalton won the silver medal on the floor exercise at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, Saturday.

Dalton performed an Arabian double layout to begin his routine and finished with a stuck triple twisting dismount, pumping his fists as he left the podium. His routine resulted in a score of 15.600, earning him his first individual World Championship medal and the first U.S. men’s floor medal since Paul Hamm won the event in 2003.

“I am waiting for it to settle in,” said Dalton right after the event. “I’m still a little nervous and shaky from competing, but it is a great feeling (to medal) and was fun to be out there. My dismount sometimes gives me trouble, and sticking it at the end was a key for me. This is one of the best (I’ve done), and I am going to keep it going forward.”

Another former Sooner and Team USA member, Steve Legendre placed fifth on floor. Legendre mounted with a front double full to double front and dismounted with a piked Arabian double front, earning a 15.366.

"I'm so proud of both Steve and Jake," said OU head coach Mark Williams, who is the personal coach of both Dalton and Legendre. "Jake performed an awesome floor routine with a stuck landing on the dismount. Him being second and Steve being fifth in the world is a great day for Oklahoma gymnastics and the USA Team."

The silver medal by Dalton is the second-best finish by an OU gymnast ever at a World Championships (Bart Conner won gold on parallel bars in 1979) and the first-ever floor medal earned by a Sooner. It's Dalton's second medal after earning a team bronze in 2011 and the 10th medal won by an OU gymnast overall.

Dalton joins Conner and Jonathan Horton as Sooners with individual World Championship medals. Horton won a team bronze in 2011 with Dalton and an all-around bronze in 2010. Conner added bronze medals in the team competition and on vault in addition to his gold in 1979.

World Championship competition finishes tomorrow with Legendre participating in the vault final.
