NORMAN, Okla. --Two Sooners advanced in the men’s singles main draw and a doubles team continued at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa Thursday.
After receiving a first round bye in the men’s singles main draw Guillermo Alcorta defeated Florida’s Stephane Piro 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 in the second round Thursday. Late Wednesday Alcorta competed against USC’s Roberto Quiroz, ousting him in straight sets. The OU senior faces North Carolina State’s Austin Powell in the third round.
Junior Dane Webb battled Wake Forest’s Adam Lee, and after dropping the first set 5-7 Webb came back to win the final two sets. He played Notre Dame’s Gregory Andrews in the second round, ousting the Irishman 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1. Webb plays archrival, Texas’ George Goldhoff Friday.
The main doubles draw began Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Sooner tandem Andrew Harris and Dane Webb defeated South Carolina’s Chip Cox and Kyle Koch 8-7(2). The pair’s next contest is against Arkansas’ Manfed Jeseke and Mike Nott in the second round Friday.
After winning four consecutive matches, Axel Alvarez was eliminated in the second round of the men’s singles main draw. Alvarez fell in straight sets to USC’s Ray Sarmiento.
