NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team opened the 2013 fall season today. The team split as four played at the Country Club of Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark. and five Sooners played at the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
Seniors Hermon Brhane, Whitney Wofford and Mia Lancaster and freshman Morgan Chumney began their fall competition in Little Rock, Ark.
Both doubles teams saw success as Chumney and Brhane defeated Celia Fraser and Elena Kordolaimi (Houston) and Wofford and Lancaster defeated Despoina Vogasari and Maria Cardenas (Houston).
Lancaster was the sole singles winner at the CCLR Invitational as she defeated Memphis’ Alyssa Hibberd, 2-6, 7-6,7-5.
Chumney, Brhane and Wofford fell in their singles rounds to Stefanie Mikesz (Memphis) 7-5, 6-3, Julia Jones (Ole Miss) 6-4, 6-3, and Caroline Wegner (Memphis) 6-2,6-1, respectively.
Senior Whitney Ritchie, junior Abbi Melrose, sophomores Zita Engbroks and Emma Devine and freshman Ann Pepper spent Friday at the Tribe Invitational.
Doubles pair Ritchie and Devine defeated Miles and Bekarova (Utah) 8-7 (4) before moving on to face Virginia. Ritchie and Devine defeated Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi 8-4 to end their first day of doubles play.
Along with her wins in doubles, Devine went on to defeat Kai Broomfield (Marshall) 4-6, 6-4,6-3. However, Ritchie struggled in singles play and was defeated by Stephanie Nauta (Virginia), 6-3,6-2.
Junior Abbi Melrose and sophomore Zita Engbroks were defeated in doubles play by South Carolina’s Ximena Siles-Luna and Meghan Blevins 8-1 moving them into the consolation bracket. The duo then fell to Dartmouth’s Julienne Keong and Melissa Matsuoka 8-5, ending their weekend.
Melrose and Engbroks did not fare well in singles play and fell to Andrea Retolaza Andrade (Wake Forest), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Luisa Garstner Da Rosa (Utah), 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
Freshman Ann Pepper made her collegiate debut and was defeated by Marshall’s Rachel Morales, 7-5, 6-3.
Despite the mishaps, head coach David Mullins thinks the team is headed in the right direction.
"We definitely looked a little rusty today in a couple of matches, but overall I was actually quite pleased by some of the things we did, “ he said. “It will get better as the weekend moves along but right now we are exactly where I thought we would be."
