NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma returns home to host its annual NIKE Invitational from September 19-21. Play gets underway Thursday night when the Sooners take on Nebraska-Omaha at 7:00 pm. The action continues with matches against Miami and LIU Brooklyn on Friday and Saturday.
7 THINGS TO TRACK HEADING INTO THIS WEEKEND
1. Fastest to 10 Wins
OU is 10-1 through its first 11 games, the fastest to 10 wins in program history. Over that stretch, the Sooners are outhitting the competition, .281-.183.
2. National Player of the Week
Adding to her accolades, Sallie McLaurin was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Week on September 17. She became the second OU player to earn the honor, last won by Caitlin Higgins on November 4, 2008.
3. Three in a Row
On Monday, McLaurin became the first volleyball student-athlete in Big 12 history to win the league’s Offensive Player of the Week award three weeks in a row. She hit .630 and totaled 38 kills, averaging 4.22 per set. For her career, McLaurin has now totaled nine Big 12 weekly awards.
4. 40-Dig Effort
Sophomore libero Taylor Migliazzo set a program-record for digs in a five-set match during the 25-Point Rally Scoring Era (2008-present) with 40 at Tulsa on September 17. She passed her previous career-high with 22 in the first two sets. Migliazzo became the first Sooner to pass 30 digs in a match since Fernanda had 31 against Missouri (10/5/11). The single-match record at OU is 55 set by Debbie Carlson vs. New Mexico (11/19/87).
5. Against the Field
The Sooners will match-up opposite of Nebraska-Omaha and LIU Brooklyn for the first time in program history. Oklahoma has taken the floor with Miami four times with each team earning a pair of victories. The two teams met twice at neutral sites in 1979. OU claimed the first meeting in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while Miami won in Orlando, Fla. The Sooners won again at home in 2010, 3-1, followed by a 3-1 loss to the Hurricanes on the road in 2011.
6. 2012 NIKE Invitational Recap
Oklahoma claimed the title at its home tournament to open the 2012 season with wins over Missouri State (3-1), Western Michigan (3-0) and Tulsa (3-2). Morgan Reynolds was named the Tournament MVP after a 38-kill, 17-block performance. McLaurin and Julia Doyle joined her on the All-Tournament Team. Tulsa finished second in the team standings with wins over Western Michigan (3-0) and Missouri State (3-0).
7. Doubling Up
Through the first 10 matches of the season, Keila Rodriguez had the team’s only double-double. Against Tulsa on September 17, she was one of three Sooners to notch a double-double. Rodriguez posted 10 kills and 23 digs, while McLaurin added 25 kills and 10 blocks and Doyle contributed 33 assists and 12 digs.
