NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men’s golf team opened the 2013-14 season Sunday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa. Through 18 holes, the Sooners sit in a tie for second place after shooting a 290 (+2) at the 7,301-yard, par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

OU, who is ranked No. 19 in the preseason Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, shares second place with No. 14 New Mexico. The Sooners trail Houston by one stroke and lead fourth-place Virginia Tech by two shots and fifth-place Jacksonville State by three strokes.

The three-day, 54-hole event features 15 teams from 15 different conferences. Following a rain delay that suspended play for 30 minutes early in the round, OU teed off from hole No. 1.

“I am proud of our guys and what we showed today,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “I was disappointed in how we finished the round, but overall, I think we played pretty well. Hopefully we can get back in that same position tomorrow and finish better.”

Senior Michael Schoolcraft and junior Charlie Saxon led the Sooners through the first 18 holes, both recording an even-par score of 72, good for 11th place out of 75 competitors. Saxon registered four birdies in the round, while Schoolcraft pocketed three. The pair sits three strokes off leader Tyler Merkel of Ball State.

A trio of Sooners, including junior Michael Gellerman, sophomore Beau Titsworth and freshman Max McGreevy, is tied for 18th place after each shooting a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday.

Gellerman started the day strong, shooting par through the front nine and pocketing birdies on holes No. 10 and No. 11 before bogeying three of the last four holes.

Titsworth and McGreevy both finished with four birdies on the day. Titsworth opened the round with a triple bogey on the par-4 first hole but rebounded to birdie the second, fourth, eighth and 12th holes.

The second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge is slated for 9 a.m. Monday, with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10. The final 18 holes are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with a shotgun start. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at GolfStat.com
