NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team is set to begin its 2013-14 season Sunday at Golfweek’s Conference Challenge, a tournament that features 15 teams from 15 different conferences. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the 7,301-yard, par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
The Sooners, who are No. 19 in the preseason Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, will face a field that includes No. 9 LSU, No. 14 New Mexico, Arizona, Ball State, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, Florida Gulf Coast, Houston, Iowa, Jacksonville State, Louisiana Tech, Texas State, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.
OU’s lineup will feature juniors Michael Gellerman and Charlie Saxon, sophomore Beau Titsworth, freshman Max McGreevy and senior Michael Schoolcraft.
“We have a young squad going, but four of these guys have played in the NCAAs at some point, so we will still have quite a bit of experience,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Our goal this week will be to put ourselves in a position to have an opportunity to win coming down the stretch. We are looking forward to getting the year started off right with some good solid golf and see where that leads us.”
Titsworth and Schoolcraft both competed in all 13 of OU’s team tournaments last season. Saxon participated in seven total events, including the last four of the season, and Gellerman appeared in eight.
The Sooners are coming off a season in which they qualified for their third straight NCAA Championships. OU finished 11th for the second year in a row after posting a three-round 283 (+3) at the Capital City Club in Atlanta, Ga., in May.
The first and second rounds of Golfweek’s Conference Challenge are slated for 9 a.m. Sunday and Monday, respectively, with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10. The final 18 holes are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with a shotgun start. Live scoring for the tournament will be available at GolfStat.com.
