NORMAN, Okla. -- The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma women's golf team opened the 2013-14 season at the 15-team Dale McNamara Fall Preview in Tulsa, Okla., and through 18 holes is in second place. The Sooners shot a 282 (+2) at the 6,136-yard, par-70 Tulsa Country Club, site of the 2014 NCAA Championships.

OU trails first-place Oklahoma State by four shots and leads third-place Arizona and Duke by one stroke, and fifth-place Arizona State by two shots. Fourteen teams in the field are ranked in Golfweek's top 30. The tournament features 11 of the nation's top 12 squads.

Seniors Kaitlyn Rohrback and Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil led the Sooners Monday, each recording a 1-under 69. The pair is tied for third place out of 75 competitors, two strokes behind leader Julie Yang of Oklahoma State.

Jao-Javanil, who won the 2012 NCAA individual title and is a two-time first-team All-American, was in first place at 3 under par through 16 holes before bogeying each of the last two. She finished with a team-high four birdies on the day.

Rohrback's 69 marked her second-lowest round as a collegian (she shot a first-round 68 at the Alamo Invitational last October). She was solid all day, registering three birdies and just two bogeys.

Senior Emily Collins and freshman Alexandra Kaui each shot a 2-over 72 and are tied for 31st place. Collins was at -1 through 15 holes before bogeying the par-4 seventh and double-bogeying the par-3 ninth.  Kaui, playing in OU's No. 1 position, triple-bogeyed her first hole and then played the next 13 holes at 2 under par. She bogeyed the sixth and seventh holes on the back side before ending the day with a birdie on No. 9.

Senior Anne-Catherine Tanguay is tied for 56th place after shooting a 6-over 76.

Fifth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was pleased with her team's first outing of the season.

"Overall, we played pretty solid all day," Drouin-Luttrell said. "Conditions got tougher toward the end of our round with some gusty winds. Ja and Kaitlyn played consistently throughout the round and were both able to make some good birdie putts and par saves. Tomorrow we will adjust some parts of our game plan and go from there."

OU will tee off in Tuesday's second round on hole 1 beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT. The tournament will conclude Wednesday.
