On DE D.J. Ward’s status:
“DJ (Ward) is having his spleen removed this morning. We haven’t heard how it’s gone, but we’re hopeful it’s all gone well. That’s usually a six-week recovery give or take some, but we don’t know how that will go after that, so we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s something that, he just had an enlarged spleen. It had nothing to do with contact or anything, so they felt the need to remove it.”

On whether Ward will redshirt:
“It’s way too early to say that. We’re still two-and-a-half weeks from the season.”

On the progress of guys who are competing to replace Lane Johnson:
“Those guys are all doing well. Tyrus (Thompson) is working at the left side and Daryl (Williams) at the right. Our other guys are working in with them, Derek Faniok some and Josiah St. John, as well.”

On when the team will start preparing for Louisiana-Monroe:
“We start on [Louisiana-Monroe] sometime next week, but they’re an excellent football team. They beat Arkansas and took Auburn to the wire, and in all respect they should have beat them with the way the game went, and on and on. They’re a really good football team, and they’ve proven it year in and year out.”

On comparing ULM’s style to West Virginia:
“There are some similarities.”

On the adjustment of DT Chuka Ndulue from end to defensive tackle:
“Chuka (Ndulue) is doing a really good job. He’s playing hard, and he’s playing with really good technique. He’s holding his weight up there. He’s in the mid to low 280s. He’s strong as well.”

Linebacker Corey Nelson
Post-Practice Highlights

On the importance of this year for him:
“This is a very big year for me, because it’s my last year. I have to be able to show that I’m capable and the coaches are going to let happen because I’m an older guy and I’m a leader. They look for me to lead so I have to lead by example. I should have a lot of tries out there to make plays.

On proving himself after a down year last year:
“I feel like I have a lot to prove since last year was a down year. It’s not even just me; it’s the defense as a whole. We all have something to prove.”

On freshman linebacker Dominique Alexander:
“Dominique Alexander is a great athlete. Coming in, I was watching this guy play and he just fits right into the defense. He just has instincts for the ball and that’s what allows him to make plays out there and that’s what allows him to keep up with the speed of the game.

“He has smooth hands. I’ve never seen him drop a ball before since we have been out there. He’s just real smooth with everything that he does.”

On who could surprise on the defensive line:
“Chaz Nelson, Geneo Grissom, and Chuka Ndulue. That’s what I’m expecting.”

On freshman linebacker Jordan Evans:
“Jordan Evans is a great athlete. He was making plays out there yesterday. He’s very big and he can fly around really well. He will be a great athlete, especially in this Oklahoma defense these upcoming years.”

On seeing highlights of Jordan Evans returning kicks:
“No, he never showed me but he always talks about it when we are in the locker room. He talks about how he can run the ball back.”
