NORMAN, Okla. – Former Oklahoma track & field standout Tia Brooks finished eighth at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, on Monday.

Brooks advanced to the finals with a qualifying throw of 17.92 meters on Sunday, finishing in the top 12 among 30 competitors from around the globe.

One of three Americans in the competition and one of two in the finals, Brooks registered a throw of 18.09 meters on her first attempt for the eighth-place finish.

Valerie Adams of New Zealand took the gold with a throw of 20.88 meters for her fourth-straight World Championship title.

Brooks’ finish was especially impressive due to her recent schedule. While the other competitors at Worlds have worked to put on their peak performance in Moscow, Brooks was the only participant to be coming off a collegiate career, including focusing on the NCAA outdoor season.

Along with her finish Tuesday, Brooks’ 2013 season has been one of the most impressive in history. She became the first collegiate woman and just the fifth American ever to throw over 63 feet, doing so at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Brooks followed up her performance by also winning the outdoor shot put at the NCAA meet, giving her four national titles to go with five Big 12 career titles, including two in 2013.
