The men's title was the seventh national championship in Mark Williams' OU head coaching career and second in a row. The women's gymnastics title was the second in three years for the Sooners under head coach K.J. Kindler. And the softball crown was head coach Patty Gasso's third at OU and second in the last four years.

The 2016 titles also marked the fourth consecutive year for the Sooners to celebrate at least one national championship. Men's gymnastics also won in 2015, women's gymnastics was the co-champion in 2014 and softball won its second national title in 2013.
