NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team will compete in NMSU Women's Golf Intercollegiate Oct. 8-10 in Las Cruces, N.M. The tournament will be held at the 6,119-yard, par-72 University Golf Course. The tournament will be formatted with 18 holes each day. The first two days will start with tee times off holes one and 10 and the final day will begin with a shotgun start. Competing for the Sooners will be Hope Edge, Allison Johnson, Lisa Meldrum, Emily Milberger and Jennifer Tannehill. Marsha Gonzaga will compete for OU as an individual. The 14-team field will consist of New Mexico State, UCLA, Arkansas - Little Rock, UTEP, North Texas, New Orleans, Arizona State, Baylor, Middle Tennessee, San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

Sooners Place Seventh at Big 12 Invitational

The Oklahoma women's golf team began its season with a seventh-place finish at the Big 12 Invitational at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma recorded the low third round with a score of 309 as it became acclimated with the five-man team format. Junior Allison Johnson led the team with a seventh-place finish and a score of 228. Trailing her by one stroke was sophomore Lisa Meldrum in 10th place. Senior Jennifer Tannehill placed 48th with a score of 249. Fellow seniors Jennifer James and Wendy Martin placed 61st and 67th, respectively, with scores of 252 and 255. The Big 12 Invitational marked the first tournament of the year for the lady golfers, after they withdrew from the Dick McGuire Invitational because of travel concerns.

Sooners At A Glance

Hope Edge: Making her first appearance for the Sooners this year ... Fired her low round last year at the UCLA Invitational ... Recorded a 79.7 scoring average in her first year of collegiate competition.

Marsha Gonzaga: Will be competing in her first tournament of the year ... Ended last season with an 82.8 scoring average ... Carded her low round score of 77 last year in the Dr. Thompson Wahine Invitational.

Allison Johnson: Led the Sooners last week at the Big 12 Invitational with a seventh-place finish and a score of 228 ... Recorded the second-best scoring average on the team last season with a 76.5 ... A 2001 Academic All-American and Academic All-Big 12 honoree ... One of two Sooners last year named a second-team All-Big 12 selection.

Lisa Meldrum: Shot a 229 at the Big 12 Invitational last week for a 10th-place finish ... Showed one of the most impressive starts for a freshman last year, including a first-place finish at the Big 12 Championships ... Fired a career low 67 at the 2001 Big 12 Championships ... Recorded the lowest scoring average on the team last season with a 75.1 ... Named second-team All-Big 12 last year ... Honored as the 2001 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Jennifer Tannehill: Carded a 249 last week at the Big 12 Invitational for 48th place ... Finished the season with an explosive third-place finish at the 2001 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic ... Fired her low round of 70 last year at the UALR Invitational ... Recorded a scoring average of 76.9 last season ... Member of the 2001 Academic All-Big 12 second team.

Emily Milberger: Making her collegiate debut this week ... Kansas state champion in 2000 and runner-up 1999 ... Selected to the All-Sun and all-metro teams (two years).

"I'm very excited. This is a very different lineup and I'd like to see how the young ones play together. We're definitely going to miss the seniors in Wendy Martin and Jennifer James.
