This Week for the Sooners
The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (2-3) will play Northeastern State University (0-0) on Sun., Feb. 27, at the Westwood Tennis Courts in Norman. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. In the teams' last meeting on March 6, 1999, the Sooners blanked the Redmen, 7-0.
Recapping Last Weekend's UTA Match
The Sooners were defeated in a close contest against Texas-Arlington last Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
OU split the singles matches with the Mavericks. The Sooners were defeated at the top three positions but were able to pull out victories in the bottom three slots.
At the No. 4 position, junior Julio Martinez (Algorta, Spain) won in straight sets over Mattias Larsson, 7-5, 6-4. OU senior Rick Warren (Austin, Texas) was victorious over Alon Goldshuv at the No. 5 position, 7-5, 6-4. And freshman Tobias Kronlein (Askim, Sweden) overwhelmed Karlm Debs at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, the No. 3 team of freshmen Matt Ogle (Jenks, Okla.) and Chris Mitchell (Jenks, Okla.) beat UTA's Tomaaz Zarzeozny and Goldshuv, 8-3. It was the only doubles match the Sooners won.
UTA's Andy Leger and Ola Bentzen overpowered Warren and Charlie Roberson (San Angelo, Texas), 8-4. In the deciding match, Dusty Beard (Jenks, Okla.) and Jeremy Dunham (Okmulgee, Okla.) were edged by Larsson and Per-Erik Karisson, 9-8.
Regional and National Rankings
In Region V, Oklahoma is currently ranked seventh out of 15 schools. Thus far, the Sooners have only faced two schools in the region. OU crushed No. 13 Wichita State, 7-0, on Feb. 4 and edged No. 10 Southwest Missouri State, 4-3, on Feb. 11.
In the singles rankings, Beard is eighth, Warren is 16th and Roberson is 23rd.
Nationally, the duo of Roberson and Warren are ranked 37th overall.

Head Coach Paul Lockwood is in his 13th season at the helm of the Sooner men's tennis program. Lockwood took over the coaching post in 1988 and has produced an OU career record of 195-111. The 1976 Oklahoma graduate has coached 19 Big Eight Champions and seven NCAA qualifiers. Lockwood has headed eight teams that have finished in the top four in the conference. His 1992 squad won the conference title.
