NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma senior Dusty Beard was named the Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.

Last week, Beard had a flawless 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position. On Friday, April 21, Beard upset the 23rd-ranked player in the nation, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, of No. 4 Baylor at the Westwood Tennis Courts in Norman. The next day, Beard cruised past Colorado's Maciej Dilaj, 6-1, 6-2. It was Beard's fifth straight conference victory improving his league record to 7-4.

"Nobody deserves this more than Dusty," said Oklahoma Head Coach Paul Lockwood. "He has shown leadership for this team all year and has been solid for us at the No. 1 position. His performance last week really showed what how good of a player he is."

Beard has played the majority of his matches at the top of the lineup for the Sooners this season posting an overall record of 14-8. In Region V action, Beard has compiled a singles record of 9-3.

Beard and the rest of the Sooners head to the Big 12 Tournament this week as a seventh seed and will play the second-seeded Texas A&M Aggies (19-5, 7-1 Big 12). Match time is set for 4 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.
