NORMAN, Okla. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region V committee awarded three University of Oklahoma men's tennis players with individual honors for outstanding individual achievement this season.
Senior Dusty Beard was named Region V Senior Player of the Year. Beard is currently ranked 92nd in the country by the ITA and primarily played at the No. 1 singles position for OU this season posting a 9-3 record in Region V and an overall record of 19-10. He was recently named Big 12 Player of the Week after defeating Baylor's 23rd-ranked Johan Jooste. Beard became the first Sooner in six years to be named regional Senior Player of the Year.
"This is a surprise for me," said Beard. "It's not something that I thought about during the season because I just wanted to play each match to the best of my ability. But it always feels good to get respect from other players and coaches that we compete against, so I'm really honored to receive this award."
Senior Charlie Roberson received the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award for Region V. It has been nearly 10 years since another Sooner received this award. Roberson posted a 9-2 doubles record in Region V with fellow senior Rick Warren.
"It's an honor to receive this award," said Roberson. "It feels great to be acknowledged for sportsmanship by other coaches in our region."
Freshman Tobias Kronlein was named Player To Watch for Region V, becoming the first Sooner to ever earn this award. Kronlein went 7-1 in Region V singles action and compiled an overall record of 20-6 this season.
"I'm really proud of our players," said Head Coach Paul Lockwood. "There is a lot of good competition in our region. Each of them had great seasons this year and represented their school and their team in fine fashion."
Each of the regional winners are now one of eight national finalists for their respective awards. The national winners will be announced at an NCAA Championship banquet on May 23, in Athens, Ga.
