Men's Tennis Heads To Hawaii :: Sooners face Cal State-Sacramento, Portland and host Hawaii in a four-day stretch. Men's Tennis Heads To Hawaii

This Week for the Sooners:

The 53rd-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team (7-5) will be on the road this week in Honolulu, Hawaii, to play a trio of matches at the University of Hawaii Tennis Courts. On Tuesday, March 14, OU will face Cal State-Sacramento (4-3) at 10 a.m. The Sooners will be back in action on Wednesday, March 15, against Portland (6-8) at 10 a.m. On Friday, March 16, Oklahoma will conclude its three-day stretch against host-school Hawaii (9-11), at 3:30 a.m. All times are Hawaii Standard Time.

Recapping The Oral Roberts Contest:

The Sooners were on the road last Wednesday in Tulsa Okla., to take on Oral Roberts. OU was victorious over the Golden Eagles, 6-1. OU pushed its record to 7-5 while the Golden Eagles fell to 2-7.

OU dominated the doubles action, 3-0. The No. 1 duo of Charlie Roberson (San Angelo, Texas) and Rick Warren (Austin, Texas) beat Gareth Donachie and Duncan Fourie, 8-4. Dusty Beard (Tulsa, Okla.) and Tobias Kronlein (Askim, Sweden) continued their winning ways at the No. 2 spot with an 8-4 decision over Pradip Prabakar and John Hixon, 8-4.

And the newest doubles team for OU, Jeremy Dunham (Okmulgee, Okla.) and Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.), picked up their first win of the season against Chris Moore and Matt Munson, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.

In the singles competition, the Sooners pulled out several close matches. At the No. 1 position, Beard came back to edge Donachie, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Dunham won a three-set match over Fourie, 6-4, 5-6, 6-2, and Kronlein rebounded to beat Jared Welch, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, at the No. 6 position.

Regional and National Rankings:

With its impressive showing at the H.E.B. Tournament a week and a half ago, Oklahoma is ranked No. 53 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Sooners have not been ranked since they were tied for 75th in the preseason poll this season.

In Region V, Oklahoma is currently ranked seventh out of 15 schools. The Sooners boast two of the top four doubles teams in the region. Seniors Beard and Dunham are ranked second and the team of Roberson and Warren are currently ranked fourth.

In the singles rankings, Beard is ranked eighth, Warren is ranked 16th and Charlie Roberson is 23rd.

Kronlein On Fire:

With a combined record of 11-2, freshman Tobias Kronlein has proved to be one of the most solid players on the OU men's tennis team this season. Kronlein's victory over Jared Welch at Oral Roberts extended his individual winning streak to eight-straight matches.

Head Coach Paul Lockwood:

Head Coach Paul Lockwood is in his 13th season at the helm of the Sooner men's tennis program. Lockwood took over the coaching post in 1988 and has produced an OU career record of 200-113. The 1976 Oklahoma graduate has coached 19 Big Eight Champions and seven NCAA qualifiers. Lockwood has led eight teams to finish in the top four in the conference and his 1992 squad won the conference title.
