Dec. 1, 2001
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team, ranked No. 2/3, cruised past Rutgers (38-3) and Rider (36-6) Saturday in pair of dual meets Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the year.
It its first meet of the day in Piscataway N.J., the Sooners tallied three falls and two major decisions in its win over Rutgers. The most anticipated matchup was probably the first, with No. 4/1 Josh Lambrecht taken on the Scartlet Knights' Tom Tanis (No. 7/NR), who was competing in his first match of the year because of injury. Lambrecht prevailed, 7-4, to set the table for Oklahoma.
OU followed that with a couple of pins at 197 by NR/No. 19 Tom Grossman (0:59 over John Hockin) and at heavyweight No. 4/2 Leonce Crump (1:36 over Frank Sabatino). Then, No. 8/6 Matt Ridings and No. 2/2 Witt Durden scored a pair of major decisions to take a commanding 23-0 lead. It was 26-0, after NR/No. 16 Melvin Lofton's decision, before OU finally lost when Randy Sulaver, taken the place of top-ranked Jared Frayer at 149, fell to Greg Austin, 7-3.
In second dual against Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J., Oklahoma completely dominated the Broncs, losing one match by a forfeit at 141. Durden picked up his first fall of the season (2:42 over Dave Santamaria) and Frayer moved into second place alone all-time on OU's pin list with his seventh fall of the season (4:46 over Nick Harrington). The Clearwater, Fla. native now has 41 career pins. Other impressive victories by the Sooners in the second dual included Lambrecht's 8-0 major decision over Bob Pizzuto and Waller's 17-0 technical fall against Cory DeBias.
"All in all, it was a good day of wrestling," said Oklahoma Head Coach Jack Spates. "I thought we were sluggish in the first meet but we competed better against a more talented team (Rider). We scored several falls against Rider that I was really impressed with. I was particulary impressed with Witt (Durden), who scored an outstanding fall that really set the tone. This performance should get us ready for Bedlam."
The Sooners will travel to Stillwater next Sunday to take on No. 4/2 Oklahoma State in the first of their two annual Bedlam dual showdowns.
