OU Head Coach Jack Spates signed Matt Steel, an East Central High School senior and three-time state champion, to a letter-of-intent for the 2002-03 season.

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team picked up a late recruit as Matt Steel signed a letter-of-intent to wrestle for the Sooners next season. The East Central High School senior was a three-time state champion and ended his prep career with a 139-13 record. Steel, a high school and free style All-American, currently has a 3.2 grade point average and plans to major in sales and marketing at Oklahoma.

"Not only is Matt Steel a great wrestler, he is also an outstanding student and person as well," said Oklahoma Head Coach Jack Spates. "His choice of OU reflects the confidence that Oklahoma's best wrestlers have in our program. Matt will play an important role in helping us defend the Big 12 Championship and helping lead the Sooners to the national championship."
