Head Coach Jack Spates and his third-ranked Sooners take on Bacone and North Carolina State on Thursday.
Jan. 2, 2002
After a lengthy break, OU will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 3, when it competes against Bacone and North Carolina State. The Bacone match will take place at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City at 1 p.m. while the Wolfpack match will be back at the Howard McCasland Field House at 7 p.m. that evening.
OU Falls To No. 2 Oklahoma State
Oklahoma lost its first match of the year, 18-15, to No. 2 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Stillwater. In the first of its two annual showdowns with the Cowboys, the Sooners fell behind early losing five of the first six matches before settling for a three-point loss. No. 6/3 Matt Ridings remained undefeated on the year with his 5-2 decision over then-No. 2-ranked (Amateur Wrestling News) Skylar Holman at 125. Another big victory for the Sooners was at 174 when No. 9/14 Michael Barger defeated Ty Wilcox, 10-8, in overtime. OU's two top-ranked wrestlers at the time, Witt Durden and Josh Lambrecht, both suffered their first defeats of the season.
About Bacone And North Carolina State
Bacone, in its first year as an affiliate of NAIA, has competed in only one dual this season, losing to Labette (Kan.) JC on Dec. 4. The Wolfpack is undefeated (4-0) in dual competition this year. In its last match, the N.C. State duals on Dec. 8, the Wolfpack claimed three victories over VMI (22-15), Old Dominion (28-13) and then-No. 22 Drexel (32-12) in Raleigh. OU leads the all-time series, 3-0.
Riding Along To Victory
Along with being unbeaten, senior Matt Ridings has tallied three falls and three victories over top-20 competition in fifteen matches so far in 2001-02. Ridings unbeaten streak to start the season is two off his career high of 17 set last year.
Strong At 141 Too
As expected, OU has two of the top wrestlers in the country at 125 with Ridings and Bo Maynes. However, the Sooners have two quality wrestlers at 141 as well with Melvin Lofton and Nate Parker. Combined, the two gapplers are 25-7 this year and both have been ranked in the top 25 nationally. Parker made his first dual start for the Sooners against Oklahoma State in which he was victorious, pinning Ronnie Delk just 2:41 into the match.
Sooner Pin Parade
Last season, OU racked up 82 pins, second most in school history. After their first two tournaments of this year, the Sooners have already totaled 40 falls.
Oklahoma will travel to Grand Prairie, Texas, to compete in the Lone Star Duals on Saturday. The Sooners will take on Harvard (10:15 a.m.), Navy (1:30 p.m.), Princeton (2:45 p.m.) and Cornell (7:30 p.m.).
