ALBANY, N.Y. - The OU wrestling team continued to excel at the 2002 NCAA National Championships in Albany, New York. After the third session, eight of 10 Sooner wrestlers remained including four (Witt Durden, Nate Parker, Jared Frayer and Josh Lambrecht) who advanced into the semfinals. In team contention, Oklahoma dropped to second with 68.5 points behind top-ranked Minnesota (85.5).

The Sooners got the quarterfinals off to a rousing start with three straight victories. Durden, Parker and Frayer all defeated opponents in the top ten before Robbie Waller fell to undefeated and top-ranked Joe Heskett of Iowa State in a major decision, 10-2, at 165 pounds.

OU sent its fourth wrestler into the semifinals at 184 when Lambrecht registered a technical fall over Michigan's Andy Hrovt, 19-2. Hrovt was number three in the country. At heavyweight, Leonce Crump fell to Jake Vercelli of Purdue, 5-3, in sudden victory.

In the consolation rounds, Matt Ridings and Michael Barger each won two matches to move into the fourth session and remain alive for an All-American berth. In one match, Barger defeated OSU's Ty Wilcox, 3-1, to avenge his Big 12 Championship loss to Wilcox.
