ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team showed off its ability at the 2002 NCAA National Championships in front of 12,644 fans Thursday morning in Albany, New York, by leading the tournament after the first session. OU won all nine matches in the opening round and split two matches in the pigtail session. Combined, the Sooners went 10-1 and head into the second round with nine of ten wrestlers in the championship bracket. Oklahoma, with 25 points, is ahead of top-ranked Minnesota (23), No. 2 Michigan (18.5) and No. 3 Iowa (18). The second round begins at 6:30 p.m.
In the pigtail round to start the tournament, OU split its two matches with fourteenth-ranked Doug Cieleski losing via decision and No. 17/18 Michael Barger pinning Brady Reinke of Wisconsin just 49 seconds in.
Barger's pin helped the Sooners roll into the first round where they took all nine matches. In that round, Oklahoma tallied two more falls (No. 14/9 Nate Parker, No. 6/5 Josh Lambrecht), a technical fall (No. 4/3 Witt Durden) and four major decisions (Barger, fifth-ranked Jared Frayer, No. 10/9 Tom Grossman and No. 3/4 Leonce Crump).
